We all know that they come and go, and if we don't control them, we are in trouble. So we all know that we all have the the knowledge of that. But, um, but it matters.

You know what some people ask me, Uh, what about emotional intelligence? What about e Q and I Q i Q. You learn. You know, you go to university, you acquire all this information, you absorb it. You, you, you, you you have it in your brain, you become more intelligent. The more you intelligent, the more you learn. But, uh, but EQ is not something you learn in university. It's much more subtle. It It's something that, um you have to

work on with yourself a lot. And working with oneself is not something that, um is is kind of fancy because you discover things that you don't like and we all do That, uh, emotional intelligence is something in need of the It's it's it's human. So it doesn't matter if you're a homeless person

or if you're a family office or if you're a big investor, small investor or or an employee of a bank. Uh, so emotional intelligence is tremendously important for all of us as human beings in the case of a family offices. Even more because in the case of family offices, it it, um everything depends on that. I mean, I could give you countless examples even in in in, in our own family, in our own family, we had, uh, uh, the transfer of power. For example,

if your family lacks emotional intelligence, when the transfers of power is being produced, the issues you can come across are absolutely phenomenal. Uh, and people might think, of course. I mean, we are talking about a lot of money, you know, big amounts of money, big sums, big, uh, real estate portfolios or or, you know, gold jewellery. No,

that is normally not the big issue and that you can talk about about it with any family of us. And they would all all all agree, Uh, it's about the petty things most of the times, it's about the emotion that you attach to what Mom said. What? Dad said what they thought what they wanted. Uh, you know, this little piece of jewellery that is not worth that much, but the emotion attached to that is the one that creates the problem.

Um, in our case, it took us

around 10 years of petty things. Uh uh, coming and going. And it was not about the major big things. It was more about the the the the small things because of that, uh, for example, in, uh, there was a case where we had to, um, sell part of our, uh, real estate portfolio, uh, the real estate portfolio of the family in the worst moment ever,

just after the real estate bubble. So we lost there about 60 65%. But we had to because of this, um, issues with the family dynamics. Because of this uh, uh, uh uh uh.

Show of lack of emotional intelligence. Let's let's put it that way. So it is truly, truly important.

Emotional intelligence helps, uh, and and totally leads to to to success in so many ways. And one of the examples I can I can talk about is, uh, is our trading desk.

We have a trading desk with a few a few traders, Um, and, uh, because we value and we implement, uh, emotional intelligence as as as a necessary tool, we decided to, um, talk with our traders and, uh, make them do, um, a certain type of meditation before every day's opening market. So when they get to the office, uh, they all sat down.

We designed the meditation for them. So, uh, they they did the meditation and they started working.

That was one of the the the the the things we did. The other was, uh, having them know very, very clearly that if you have an issue, if you go to the office and you have a problem, you had an argument with your wife. Something with your Children, your mom, your your whatever. If you have an issue in your emotional state is not in, in, in and and check you go home or go for a walk or spend the day in the woods. You don't work that day.

It was better to have one trader, uh, working than having four or five. If the rest of them were not in, in, in, in the in the emotional space they they should be. And that started working perfectly well. That increased our, uh, uh, bottom line by 2.5% a month,

which is brutal, to be honest. And that was because we implemented a certain type of rules based on emotional intelligence, ours and our traitors. So we were managing our own and managing them at the same time.

There is never a moment where emotional intelligence is not important. Emotional intelligence. It's not something we normally think about. We just work on it to have it. So it is gonna help you, Uh, when you have AAA negotiation meeting with someone

because you're negotiating with another person. So what do you do? You You You manage your emotions because you you know what is at stake. But you also understand what the other person wants needs or what the other person values the most and what drives them all of that is super important in order to To to to reach the point you want in that negotiation. Uh, and it happens in in so many so many moments while you are taking a decision on family matters while you are taking a decision

in investment when you're deciding what to buy, what not to buy? Uh uh, if you're going to go into, for example, venture Capital,
Speaker 0:
uh, people that invest in venture capital we used to in the past, but not not anymore. Uh, venture capital. People go to, uh, founders. They talk with founders. They talk with the people that think their baby is the is is their project. So they know they know it all. They think they know it all. They think they're the only person that can run the show because it's their baby. So they have what we normally call the founders syndrome.

Uh, that's probably one of the reasons we we we left the venture capital world because it was too much to handle, To be honest with you and and you have to take them by the hand, and there are people that do that, and they love it. Uh,

but in terms of investments, in our case, it it it stopped fitting into our our our investment criteria. But, uh, but no emotional intelligence is never something that you don't use or never something that is not important, actually, uh,

emotional intelligence, intellectual intelligence. If you want to call it that way, I Q versus I Q actually, that that is a way we call it and intellectual intelligence. Because sometimes you have to explain in in in in very, very simple words because people normally don't think about that in that way. So you have to have both

intellectual intelligence you learn at school. You know, in university you learn through life through experience, emotional intelligence. You have it, you know that you have it. Everybody should be aware that they have it because we all do. We all like to be liked. We all like to be loved. We all like to be, uh, uh uh uh, taken into account. So that means you are aware of your emotions, You know, certain things, and you and you and you work with others, but yeah, it's It's something that has to work together and always be present.

Look inside. Talk to people. And, uh, if you're into in an organisation, uh, help them by bringing people to tell them and to tell by example to talk with them by examples. Uh, what does it mean to, uh, increase your emotional intelligence? What does it mean to forget about the word emotional intelligence? What does it mean to learn about yourself To get to know yourself, to be aware of your weaknesses, uh, about your

powers, about your strengths, What does it mean, how that can be implemented in your day to day life and how that is going to increase your performance in anything you do, Whatever it is, your performance. I mean, not only professionally, but personally. How is that gonna, um, improve your your life? Just tell them

and people would look inside and say OK, well, now that I know that about myself, I feel more comfortable talking about it with other people, or I feel more comfortable. Or now I understand why you were acting in that way,

because I understand myself. And now that means I'm open to understand other people better that is going to increase performance. Always, always so encouraging your people if you're in an organisation and if you're a A person and an individual, um,

talk with someone, talk with someone that knows a little bit more that has the the the the 30,000 ft vision and, uh, and can give you a little hand on that. But always, always keep looking. Always keep searching and always keep, um, improving your knowledge and your awareness about yourself that is going to take you always to a good place. Always

in summary. At the end of the day, uh, someone should improve or should work on their emotional intelligence for the simple reason of getting stronger for the simple reason of having more power.

It is the cornerstone of everything. Emotional intelligence.
